It is one of the most common questions we get, and a fair one. Can my NDIS funding actually pay for a day out? The short answer is that in most cases the support side of it can. But there is a bit of nuance worth understanding, so you know exactly what you are signing up for.

The short answer
Day outs and social activities are exactly the kind of thing a lot of NDIS plans are set up to support. The funding usually comes from your social and community participation budget, which is designed to help you get out, be social and take part in your community. So yes, for many people, the support to go on a day out is covered.
The bit worth understanding
Here is the nuance. Your funding pays for the support to be there, not usually the activity itself.
So a support worker coming along to help you enjoy the day, that is the kind of thing the funding covers. Your own entry ticket, your lunch, your personal spending, those are generally yours, the same as they would be for anyone on a day out.
The one exception is some group programs where the activity cost is built into the hourly rate the provider charges. When it is bundled in, it can be covered. It is always worth asking a provider how theirs is set up.

Which part of my plan pays for it?
Usually your Core Supports budget, under Assistance with Social and Community Participation. That is the part designed to help you take part in the community right now. Some skill focused activities might draw on Capacity Building instead, but for a regular day out, Core is the usual home.

Does everyone have this funding?
Not everyone, and not the same amount. It depends on your plan and your goals. Here is a useful tip though. If getting out, being social or building confidence is written into your plan as a goal, there is a good chance the funding to support it is in there too. Goals and funding go hand in hand.
If it is not in your plan and you think it should be, that is worth raising at your next plan reassessment. Your coordinator can help you put it in plain terms, like wanting to attend a weekly social activity to build confidence and connections.
Group days out stretch your funding further
Worth knowing: group days out usually cost less per person than one to one support, because one support worker is there for the whole crew rather than just you. So your funding goes further, and you get a group of mates in the bargain. That is a big part of why our days out are such good value.
What about getting there?
Transport to and from a day out can often be covered too, depending on your plan. We can usually sort transport for you, or you are welcome to meet us at the venue if that suits you or saves a bit of funding. Either way, we work it around you.
